Cornyation raises over $120,000 for
AIDS charities
QSanAntonio.com, July 2, 2011
Organizers of Cornyation, one of San Antonio's most popular Fiesta events,
this week distributed over $120,000 in donations to three local AIDS/HIV
charities. Additionally they awarded scholarships to four graduating high
school seniors.
The money was raised during the six performances of Cornyation held this
year at the Charlene McCombs Empire Theater from April 12 -14. Every year,
all six performance typically sell out.
The check presentation event was held at the offices of Hope Action Care
on June 30. Members of the board of Cornyation along with Cornyation founder
Ray Chavez presented checks in the amount of $40,000 each to BEAT AIDS,
the San Antonio AIDS Foundation and Hope Action Care.
Robert Rheam scholarships also were given to Stephanie Cavazos, Alexander
Bernal, Matilda Burnabee and Ryan Garrett. All four seniors are going
on to college to pursue a theater-related curriculum.
After the check presentation, recording star Martha Wash, who's in town
to perform at the Pride San Antonio Block Party, made a special appearance
where she spoke briefly and then posed for pictures with her fans.

Tim Campion, King Anchovy XLVI (photo left, top row in gold wig) and his
Court of Double-Dip Shellacking hit the stage on April 12 at the Charlene
McCombs Empire Theater for another sold-out edition of Cornyation. QSanAntonio
photographer Antonia Padilla was backstage on the night of the first performance
when nervous performers were getting ready to entertain Fiesta audiences.
In one dressing room the question, "Does anybody have any glitter?"
was answered in the affirmative by several with the response, "What
color?"

Cornyation
dazzles with bawdy humor
San Antonio Express-News, April 14, 2011
Cornyation is not a gay event. It's just happy. And there's a lot of glitter
and men wearing makeup and spandex. For those with tickets to Fiesta's
“raunchiest, cheapest event,” former participants say it's
an “up year” for the spoof revue, which features dancing,
tacky costumes, outrageous lampoonery and a halfway decent job of lip-
synching.
