Neighbors, friends puzzled by gay couple's murder-suicide
QSanAntonio, January 17, 2014

A gay couple who recently moved to San Antonio from the Rio Grande Valley were found dead in their home on the Northwest side on Saturday, January 11. Police say it was a murder-suicide.

Baldemar Hernandez, 25, and his partner, 39-year-old Eric Florke were found dead in their bed by police after neighbors became suspicious when the couple's garage door was left open for several days and their dogs were running loose.

Police believe the men had been dead at least a couple of days before their bodies were discovered.

According to police, there was no indication of forced entry at home, which is in the 13400 block of Vista Del Mar off Blanco Road. However, there were signs of a struggle and a handgun was found at the scene. One neighbor told police she had heard two gunshots but at the time could not tell where they had originated.

On Monday, January 13, police released a report listing Florke as the suspect and Hernandez as the victim.

The couple's neighbors were stunned by the discovery. “They were a really nice couple. They had just moved here from the Valley,” one woman told the San Antonio Express-News.

Another neighbor said, "Nothing ever seemed suspicious. I would never think that this would happen. They seemed so happy together.”

Those sentiments were echoed by Betty Garza, Hernandez's former manager at Coldwell Banker- La Mansion Real Estate in McAllen where he worked before moving to San Antonio.

"They were both fine people. That's why this very hard to understand," Garza told a reporter for KGBT-TV in Harlingen. "He (Hernandez) was always happy, always had a smile on his face, (was) a very, very positive person, (had a) big heart and that's how we'll remember him," she said.

News reports say Florke was a pilot who worked for a produce company. In a web search, QSanAntonio found a listing that showed Florke had been affiliated with Frontera Produce in Edinburg, Texas as Senior Chief Pilot but could not confirm that he was still working for that company at the time of his death.

A funeral mass was held for Hernandez on Thursday, January 16 at San Martin de Porres Catholic Church in Weslaco. No arrangements for Florke have been made public as yet.
