The San Antonio chapter of the Human Rights Campaign held a 'happy hour' reception at the Monte Vista home of Wayne D. Beers and Michael Bobo, proprietors of WD Deli. The event was meant to encourage sales of tickets to the HRC Gala which is scheduled for October 15 at the Grand Hyatt. HRC reports that over 40 gala tickets were sold. San Antonio Express-News society columnist Nancy Cook-Monroe (top row, photo at right) was on hand and said that she would be reporting on the event in her July 31 column.

W. D. Deli celebrates 20th anniversary
QSanAntonio, April 10, 2010

Scores of friends and well wishers descended on W.D. Deli on April 8 to celebrate the eatery’s 20th anniversary. Judging from the enthusiasm of those at the party, the deli has a faithful and well-established following in San Antonio.

The restaurant, located at 3123 Broadway, specializes in soups, salads and sandwiches. It also offers catering for special events.

"Since 1990, our goal has been to provide our customers with delicious, fresh food in healthy portions at reasonable prices. We take a lot of pride in the fact that we have regular customers who have been enjoying lunch at the deli pretty much since we opened the doors," says Wayne D. Beers, who owns the deli with Michael Bobo, his partner of 25 years.

The location on Broadway is the deli’s second home. The original W.D. Deli opened on McCullough Avenue in Olmos Park in April of 1990. In February of 2002, the restaurant moved to its present location on Broadway.

The deli building is an old two-story house that was built in the 1920’s. The space has been not just a home, but also a steak house, a supper club, a bar, a dance studio, and a brass bed store. In the late 1960’s the building was home to the Arena, a gay bar that held regular drag shows.
