A get-well campaign for Robert Weeks
QSanAntonio, June 9, 2012

Robert Weeks, a gay San Antonio veteran, president of the San Antonio Chapter of the American Veterans for Equal Rights, and a much-loved friend to many in the community, has been hospitalized for the past three weeks.

Weeks, a Viet Nam veteran, served in the United States Army for 20 years. He is also one of the founders of the Wes Guiles color guard which participates in Pride Parades around the state of Texas and at local San Antonio events.

Weeks' good friend and fellow veteran, Ron Clarke, told QSanAntonio that Weeks initially went to the hospital for a blood clot but ended up having a leg amputated and having open heart surgery. He's been breathing with the help of a ventilator. Clark added that Weeks has no family locally.

After seeing Weeks in the hospital, Clarke says, ""Bob was so glad to see me he held out his arms for a hug and ruffled my hair. His mind is perfectly sharp but needs cards and balloons . . . he needs to know people care about him. He is in for a long tough fight."

Eric Alva, another veteran who's a friend of Weeks, paid him a visit in the Intensive Care Unit. "Though he is barely talking because he was intubated for three weeks, he did recognize me when I walked in and with what little strength he had, raised his right hand and gave me a salute," Alva wrote in a Facebook posting on Wednesday.

On Friday, Alva had updated news about Weeks' condition. "Bob had to be re-intubated yesterday morning. He is awake and alert. He squeezed my hand and knew I was there."

Alva says that Weeks, "needs our thoughts and prayers." To that end, he has started a "get-well-card" campaign, asking the community to send their get well wishes to Week's hospital room.

"He is starting to get cards from around the country now and I read two of them to him today," wrote Alva in his update. "One from New Mexico and the other from Georgia."
